In September, 1966, the Centennial Athletics Award Programme began. The programme was created to test children’s fitness, awarding badges of gold, silver, bronze and participation levels to children across Canada, aged 6 to 18. The programme was made up of three compulsory events, consisting of the standing broad jump, sit-up test, and a 300-yard run. The final event allowed the participants the choice between  swimming, cross country run, and skating. Upon completion of the four events, each participant received at least a participation badge, with bronze, silver and gold being awarded to those participants who achieved or surpassed the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (CAHPER) standards. CAHPER implemented the programme, receiving sponsorship by the Canadian Centennial Commission. The purpose of these awards was to promote the participation of Canadian youth in a physical fitness program; to recognize outstanding performance in physically active events; to promote, encourage and motivate youth to reach for excellence and achieve high levels of physical activity and to allow Canadian youth the chance to participate in Canada’s Centennial celebrations. The awards programme concluded in December 1967, as the Centennial year came to an end.
